CREATIVE AUSTRALIA
JACOB BOEHME & AUSTRALIAN FIRST NATIONS ARTISTS
We had the pleasure of working with the First Nation Australian Artists: Aunty Deanna, Aunty Lynette, and Jacob Boehme as they were in Chennai for 15 days in October thanks to the International Development Grant from Creative Australia.
The two weeks spent together were filled with meaningful exchanges, including collaborative work at the Kalakshetra Foundation's textile unit, engaging with Chennai's vibrant artist community, and hosting a unique block printing workshop that beautifully combined traditional Australian motifs made with Indian blocks. These moments remain unforgettable, especially celebrating Deepavali with them.

ADISHAKTI
URMILA
It brings us immense pleasure to collaborate, again with Adishakti Theatre, Auroville to produce their latest play URMILA.
Team SNS visited Auroville in June to witness the premiere of "Urmila" written and directed by Nimmy Raphael at Adishakti. We were captivated by the feminist perspective of the play, which offered a refreshing portrayal of a female character's viewpoint in a narrative landscape dominated by male protagonists, based on the Ramayana. This exploration of gender dynamics added depth and intrigue to the overall experience.
If you want to bring Urmila to a theatre, venue or festival near you, write to us at:

and we'll be happy to take it further.

For the FIRST TIME EVER, SNS presented a conversation between two hereditary artists from South India - Padma Shri R. Muthukannammal, a Sadhir artist from Tamil Nadu and Sangeet Natak Akademi Awardee Annabattula Lakshmi Mangatayaru, a Kalavantulu artist from Andhra Pradesh. Moderated by Dr. Yashoda Thakore, Kuchipudi and Devadasi Nrityam artist.
This moment and this evening was historic for many reasons. We got a chance to not only meet but watch these two iconic artists interact and talk about their lives from the point of their present realities, their aspirations for the future with its obvious context to their past, their communities and their forms.
We found it unique how in so many ways both Muthukannamal Amma and Mangatayaru Amma have lived parallel lives. They have faced very similar social and economic challenges and have dealt with it all while building their legacy, taking care of their families and even though they lived in neighboring states, it's only in 2023 that they will meet and talk for the first time.

ME AND MY TRASH
This is an evening of a few individual experimental movement pieces by Preethi Bharadwaj, some of which have been devised keeping in mind the artiste's journey towards generating less waste and more importantly being responsible for the unavoidable waste that gets generated. The evening is also a bit about the artiste as a woman today, navigating different spaces, her relationship with the divine and how giving the divine a human shade often helps relate better to the fact that we are after all carbon dust in the cosmic scheme of things.
"Me and my trash also signifies what I generate in my world as an artiste. My trash is a part of me. I need to take responsibility for what I create and offer. I am my trash - The choreographies of the evening are part of me, part of what I generate into the world."

FOUND IN TRANSLATION
As dancers we know the potential of movement to communicate. But sometimes before the movement can be seen by others we need some words that communicate. The words might be the title of a piece, they might be a two line description of your process, or they might be an introduction to you as an artist. Unfortunately as dancers we don't often get any guidance, help or direction on how to put words to our work. This workshop will begin that journey. Whether you want to write about an idea/project/performance or you want to write about your process/approach as an artist, this workshop will give you some starting points in putting words to work!
This workshop is a fundraiser towards the project FOUND IN TRANSLATION.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
AWARENESS CAMPAIGN
PCVC
We at SNS are happy to continue our partnership with PCVC (The International Foundation for Crime Prevention and Victim Care) to present an Auto Rickshaw Art Installation as a part of the campaign: Redrawing Resistance. In the first leg of the campaign, we produced the song Ezhundhu Vaa by Revaa. This time, we have designed an auto installation that symbolises loss, and aims to bring awareness about domestic violence to public spaces.
Upon entering what appears to be just a parked auto-rickshaw behind strings, one is surrounded with images of irrevocable loss, recovery and healing. The inner roof of the rickshaw carries the artwork by survivors of violence. As a mark of homage, we have displayed shoes to represent victims of domestic violence. Completing the immersive experience in the vehicle, is a short video about art as an intervention, a form of therapy and an expression of resistance.
If you'd like to help us bring awareness about domestic violence through this installation at your space, contact Ms. Sangeetha - +91-8610206664

SESSION 5:
DRAW YOUR BOUNDARIES
We hear the phrase "Draw Your Boundaries" so often, but how practical is it, really (especially in the Indian arts)? We occupy professional spaces in which being "easy to work with" and "flexible" are commendable professional traits. But, at what cost? We believe being a great collaborator and respecting your limits are both equally essential to professional conduct. Making assertive decisions to draw boundaries, define limits, and articulate your stance often involve weighing options and priorities, which can take a large emotional and mental toll on an individual. This session aims to unpack the practicalities of drawing boundaries, while giving you the tools to help make complex decisions with greater ease and meaningful support.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS
Having the means and access to advocate for your safety, intellectual property, and value is essential to professional conduct. This advocacy calls for knowledge and access to legal resources, which can often feel intimidating and inaccessible for various reasons. This sessions aims to decrease such barriers by empowering you with simple tools to negotiate and demand accountability. We will be answering common FAQs in three areas of law while exploring the avenues to access legal help in the context of challenging situations related to IP, financial, sexual, and ethical misconduct in the Indian arts.
